US Defense Secretary James Mattis has arrived at the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, on the first day of his visit to South Korea. Mattis will visit Observation Post Ouellette at the heavily-guarded border, where he will be briefed by US and South Korean Joint Security Area Commanders Lt. Col. Matthew Farmer and Lt. Col. Kwon Young-hwan. Earlier on Friday, Mattis visited two US military installations, Osan airbase and the Yongson garrison in Seoul. IRAQ: Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi met top US diplomat Rex Tillerson in Baghdad on Monday, challenging the secretary of state over his comments on Iranian militias in Iraq. Tillerson, in Riyadh on Sunday, had called on Iranian militias in Iraq to “go home” as the fight against the Islamic State group was ending. His comments prompted a sharp response from Baghdad. “The fighters of the Hashed al-Shaabi are Iraqis who have fought terrorism, defended their country and made sacrifices to defeat (IS),” Abadi said, according to a statement from his office. A protester threw a handful of small Russian flags at President Donald Trump as he was walking to a lunch with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill yesterday. The flags didn't appear to hit Trump, and in video of the moment, he and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was walking alongside Trump, did not appear to stop. The protester, who identified himself later to the press as Ryan Clayton, had been standing amid journalists gathered outside the meeting. Capitol Police swarmed him and removed him from the area. THE US, Japan and South Korean have begun a two-day training drill to prepare their militaries in response to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. The drill is being carried out between the allies near the border of the rogue state, in Japanese and South Korea waters. A Security Consultative Meeting agreement last year has seen similar exercises carried out ever few months. The move follows a warning from Japan that the threat posed by Kim Jong-un’s rogue state is “critical and imminent”. AUSTRALIA: Australia’s conservative government vowed Thursday to pursue efforts to tighten the country’s citizenship requirements after parliament refused to approve the crackdown. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull proposed the tougher rules in April, adding stringent English-language tests and a quadrupling of the residency requirement for citizenship applicants from one to four years. The move came against a background of growing populist pressure in Australia and a resurgence of the anti-immigration One Nation party led by Pauline Hanson.
